Grooming.By.J is flexible working in different setups based on what is available in your home. There needs to be access to a tub/shower to bathe your dog; a kitchen sink can also work for very small breeds if necessary. If your shower does not have a detachable shower head, please have a cup/bowl/small bucket available. For the haircut, small breeds can easily be on the counter or a table; larger dogs can be on the floor. For dogs groomed on the floor, kitchen or dining rooms work best with access to the edge of a table or the overhang of a counter to provide a place to secure a grooming arm to keep your dog in place.

Grooming.By.J accepts most breeds but has limitations due to not being in a salon setting. Unfortunately, a significant limitation is size; dogs over 40 lbs will be accepted on a case-by-case basis and must have extensive reasons for needing grooming outside of a salon setting. Grooming.By.J does not typically take double-coated breeds such as huskies, malamutes, Samoyeds, etc., and does not offer de-shedding services at this time. These services create too much mess to clean up after easily.

Yes, likely! Grooming.by.J can do an extensive range of grooming styles for your pup, from breed cuts to teddy bear cuts to creative grooming. A well-maintained and mat-free coat provides the most freedom regarding haircut styles.
At this time, Grooming.By.J does not offer cording services or carding for wire-haired breeds due to a lack of training in those areas. Please let me know if you are interested in those services. If multiple pet owners express interest, Grooming.By.J will work to receive training and add those services.
Grooming.By.J will not provide shave downs on double coated breeds unless the coat is matted beyond the point of safely dematting. If your dog is double-coated and requires shaving for medical reasons, please have your vet provide a note specifying the medical condition and the necessity of the shave down.

The duration of a groom is dependent on many factors, such as size, behavior, style of haircut, etc. Most dogs are completed within 2.5-3 hours. First time visits may take slightly longer as it is a new experience for your dog and Grooming.By.J is adjusting to a new space. It is common for appointments to get faster after the first visit.
If you work from home during your appointment, please ensure you have time at the beginning of the appointment to discuss the process, what haircut you are looking for, etc.

Puppies should begin grooming as soon as they have received puppy immunizations to help expose them to the process. The first visit likely will not include a full haircut but will consist of a bath, blow dry, brush out, nail trim, and a light trim to tidy the paws and clear hair from around the eyes. Keeping your puppy safe is the priority, and excited or nervous puppies can increase the risk of accidental cuts. Puppies that are calm for the beginning portion of the groom may be eligible for a full haircut if requested. Please keep puppies on a consistent grooming schedule, preferably every six weeks, to help keep them comfortable with grooming.
Introducing grooming to your puppy as young as possible is the key to a lifetime of successful grooming. If a breeder has advised you to delay grooming your puppy until it's one year old, it's important to understand the risks associated with this advice. Waiting until that age significantly increases the risk of matting, stress, or reactivity to the grooming process. Your dog will need grooming for its whole life, and starting early is the best way to ensure they are set up for success. It's crucial to disregard such advice and start grooming your puppy early.

Please note: If your dog bites and draws blood during the grooming process, the service will be stopped, and a $100 bite fee will be added to the full price of the groom. If Grooming.By.J has to stop the service before finishing due to safety concerns, you are still responsible for paying the full price of the groom.
Reactive or aggressive dogs will be accepted case-by-case, depending on triggers. Safety for your dog and for me is a priority. If your dog is typically reactive in grooming settings but not in regular daily settings, Grooming.By.J will be happy to work with you and see if home grooming is a better fit. If your dog is reactive in many different settings, please explain more about your dog's behavior when reaching out, and together, we will assess what is possible.
Grooming.By.J will groom dogs with a muzzle or on sedatives provided by a vet with prior notice when scheduling the appointment. You must provide any muzzle, cone, etc. Grooming.By.J does not carry muzzles to appointments.
-
Grooming.By.J prefers owners to be at home during the service, but you are more than welcome to be in a different room. Owners must be home for the first visit or if your dog is aggressive. Aggressive dogs will only be groomed with the owner at home; if you have an aggressive dog and must leave, the groom will stop, and you will be charged the full price of the groom regardless of what has been completed. Repeat clients with dogs comfortable with the grooming process may step out for short amounts of time but are asked to leave only for part of the appointment time and must be easily reachable by phone.
-
Grooming.By.J accepts cash, Zelle, and Venmo for payment and is required at the time of service.
-
Grooming.By.J can be flexible with some services and can add or subtract to fit your dog's individual needs. Please include what you are looking for when completing the appointment request form, and Grooming.By.J will accommodate wherever possible.
A common request is anal gland expressions. Grooming.By.J urges owners to skip external anal gland expressions and to see their vet if there is a persisting issue. Over time, manually expressing glands can lead to your pup becoming reliant instead of expressing them naturally. Manually expressing them in the home can also be challenging to clean, leaving a lingering smell.
-
Grooming.By.J uses a hypo-allergenic, soap-free, oatmeal-based shampoo and conditioner lightly scented of vanilla and almond. If you have a specific shampoo or conditioner you would like to use, or if your dog has prescription shampoo, please include that information when scheduling your appointment, and please provide that at the time of the appointment.
-
Grooming.By.J brings as many necessary items to each appointment as possible, including all grooming tools, brushes, shampoo and conditioner, towels, and dryer.
Grooming.By.J does not bring cleaning supplies to appointments. Some owners prefer to clean independently after the appointment, and some prefer Grooming.By.J to clean after. If you would like Grooming.By.J to clean after the haircut, please supply a broom/vacuum and a cleaner with towels to wipe surfaces.
-
At this time, Grooming.By.J does not accept cats as grooming clients. It is suggested that you reach out to your vet for recommendations of cat groomers to meet your needs.
